Crispy Greek Fried Cheese (Print Version)

Golden, crunchy exterior with melty interior Mediterranean-style cheese appetizer.

# What You'll Need:

→ Cheese

01 - 8.8 oz firm Greek cheese (Kefalotyri, Graviera, or Halloumi)

→ Coating

02 - 2.8 oz all-purpose gluten-free flour (or regular flour if not gluten-free)
03 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

→ Frying

04 - 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (for frying)
05 - Lemon wedges, to serve

# Steps:

01 - Cut the cheese into ½ inch thick slices or wedges. Pat the cheese dry with a paper towel to remove moisture.
02 - Place the flour on a plate and season lightly with black pepper. Dredge each cheese slice in the flour, coating both sides evenly. Shake off any excess.
03 - Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat in a non-stick skillet.
04 - Add the cheese slices to the hot oil. Fry for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden and crisp.
05 - Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with lemon wedges for squeezing over the hot, crispy cheese.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • Its ready in 20 minutes flat but tastes like something youd wait hours for at a restaurant
  • The contrast between shattering crisp crust and molten interior is absolutely addictive
02 -
  • Patting the cheese completely dry before dredging is the difference between perfectly crisp coating and a soggy, floury mess
  • Do not flip the cheese too early or the coating will stick to the pan instead of the cheese, wait until you can see the edges turning golden brown
03 -
  • Let the cheese rest for about 5 minutes at room temperature before cooking so it heats evenly throughout
  • If your cheese is particularly salty, skip the pepper in the flour coating and let the natural flavors shine
